Hostel's life in Perth
Photo STORY
The aim of this project is to show how the development of certain sectors of the economy brings with it a social, cultural and human impact, in this case, reflected in the lives of travelers seeking to experience a cultural exchange in Perth, Australia.

The mining boom in Western Australia has had a huge impact on various sectors of the Australian economy, including housing, agriculture, energy consumption, and employment. This phenomenon has attracted a large number of travelers from all over the world in order to get a position in that industry due to its high salaries. The travelers who come to this region to get a job are primarily those holding a Working Holiday visa. This visa was created to allow young people between the ages of 18 and 30, of various nationalities, to live and work legally in certain countries for a period of one year.
This visa is part of an agreement between some countries aimmed at providing young people with a legal and unrestricted cultural exchange and then secure the necessary resources for their upkeep and savings. Although the visa is initially granted for one year, certain conditions allow holders to extend it for up to two more years, to receive a total of three years, when specific jobs are completed, such as farm and agricultural work.

One of the main goals for travelers arriving with this visa in Perth is to get involved in the mining industry, as it represents a secure source of savings that will allow them to continue their travels.
While many of the travelers wait for an opportunity to work in the mines, they take other job offers that fill necessary and essential trades that ensure the economic and social dynamism of the region. Most of the positions are fiund in restaurants, cafes, bakeries, construction, cleaning, gardening, etc. Each job they perform is as important as the one performed by any other individual in the region; without the workforce to meet this demand, the optimal expansion and evolution of the entire region would not be possible.

However, the impact of this migratory movement goes beyond the number of foreigners arriving in this region, as it has affected sectors such as real estate and the increase in the prices of goods and services.
The post-pandemic consequences and other changes caused by the impact of the high salaries acquired by the mining industry workers, have brought a substantial rise in goods and services, mainly in the rental market, which has seen an increase of between 60 and 70% compared to the prices seen 5 years ago.
